Three young children are fighting for their lives after being trapped in a house fire at Sydenham in Melbourne’s northwest on Sunday night.

Fire crews arrived about 9.30pm to find the single storey brick property on Fergus Ct ablaze, with flames raging through the roof.

A “loud bang” was heard in the area around the time the fire started, police said.

Thirty firefighters managed to contain the fire.

On Monday, Melbourne reporter Andrew McCormack delivered an update on Sunrise.

“Emergency Services were called to this Fergus Ct home in Sydenham at around 9.30pm last night,” McCormack said.

“Around 30 firefighters arrived on the scene. Three young children were inside the house.

“I understand those three children are all under the age of five — so incredibly young.”

All three of the children are in hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined, but the Arson and Explosives Squad are investigating.

“Also, yet to be determined, is if the parents of the children were actually home at the time. So those investigations continue this morning,” McCormack said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
