A huge truck carrying cattle has crashed into a bridge in an inner-city suburb in Melbourne.

The truck hit the bridge on Alexandra Ave in South Yarra at 8.25pm on Tuesday.

The impact caused damage to the truck, with some of the animals escaping and later seen wandering the road.

Vets as well as Agriculture Victoria attended and treated the animals, but it is unknown at this stage if any were seriously injured.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

Alexandra Ave was closed for about eight hours overnight and was cleared by 5.30am on Wednesday.
