Anthony Basa and Pearl Construction Group Pty Ltd charged over worker’s fatal fall at Glen Waverley site

A carpenter and the building company he worked for have been charged after a worker died following a horrific fall at a residential building site in Victoria.

The 23-year-old was critically injured when he fell three metres through an unprotected stair void to the concrete floor below at the Glen Waverley site in September 2022.

The worker, who had been erecting roof trusses when the tragedy unfolded, later died in hospital.

On Wednesday, WorkSafe Victoria announced Anthony Basa, 29, trading as Big Basa Constructions, and Pearl Construction Group Pty Ltd face one charge each under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to ensure the workplace was safe and without health risks.

WorkSafe alleges both failed to control the risk of a fall from height. T

Mr Basa faces a further charge of failing to prepare a safe work method statement before performing high risk construction work.

The matters are listed for a committal mention at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 25.
