WorkSafe has charged a hospital operator following the death of a patient in their care.

The patient in question took her own life while undergoing treatment in the acute psychiatric unit at University Hospital Geelong, southwest of Melbourne, in December 2022.

Barwon Health has been hit with two charges under section 23(1) of the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to ensure, so far as was reasonably practicable, that people other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks.

The matter is listed for a filing hearing at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.
