Security footage obtained by 7NEWS shows Sherwani throwing himself against a door and banging on it for help before collapsing.
He later died in hospital.
The area has been cordoned off, and a crime scene has been established.
Sherwani is known to police and has connections to organised crime, Victoria Police Detective Superintendent Janet Stevenson said.
“At the moment we’re just trying to piece together exactly what happened,” she said.
While the “brazen” attack is “concerning for the neighbourhood” it was not random, Stevenson said.
“This is a targeted attack, there is nothing for the local residents to fear,” she said.
“It was absolutely targeted.”
However, Stevenson emphasised that community members were around and could have been hurt.
“(It was) very irresponsible behaviour and it really does concern us,” she said.
“It’s brazen, it’s irresponsible.”
A firearm was found at the scene and has been seized.
“It will be forensically examined and hopefully that will be an assistance to us as well,” Stevenson said.
A dark-coloured Tiguan Volkswagen is believed to have been involved in the incident.
The vehicle was found “torched” about 10.45pm on Beattys Rd in Fraser Rise, Stevenson said.
Investigators believe one of the attackers may have been injured as well, and urged them to get medical help.
Victoria Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information, including dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
