Witnesses stopped to help the 27-year-old cyclist but he died at the roadside.

The Audi driver allegedly left, before going to police soon after.

7NEWS understands the Audi driver worked at a luxury car dealership and had borrowed a customer’s car for the night, before being asked to return it.

Detective acting Sergeant Leigh Miller said hit-and-run incidents were becoming “all too common”.

“It’s on a weekly basis where we have a collision and the driver’s failing to stop and it’s just not good enough,” he said.

“It’s not what the public expects.”

It is believed the cyclist was a DoorDash deliverer who had just finished up for the night when he was hit.

“He didn’t have anything with him so it looks like he’s finished his deliveries for the night and is potentially just riding home,” Miller said.

Transport Workers Union national secretary Michael Kaine said the man was the 18th delivery driver killed on the job this year.

He said the TWU has previously filed worker’s compensation cases for families of riders killed on the job who were unable to access the compensation available to employees in other industries.

“These are workers who don’t have any minimum standards, they don’t have the minimum wage, they don’t have the right to challenge an unfair sacking,” Kaine said.

The alleged Audi driver, a 32-year-old man from Port Melbourne, has since been charged with failing to stop and assist after an accident.

He will face court on Thursday.

Anyone with relevant information about the incident, including CCTV or dashcam footage, is urged to contact police.
