A driver has died after a flying piece of metal fell from a passing truck and smashed through their windscreen on Melbourne’s Western Ring Road.
The car had been travelling north on the M80 Ring Rd in St Albans when a metal ramp fell off the back of a white truck travelling southbound, in the opposite direction, and into oncoming traffic about 4pm on Thursday.

The car eventually came to a stop on the Furlong Rd off-ramp and the driver was declared dead at the scene.
It is unclear at this stage if anyone else was in the vehicle.
“The truck failed to stop at the scene and was last seen travelling (towards) Altona,” police said.
“Investigators would like to speak to the driver of the truck and are appealing for anyone with dash cam vision to contact police.”
It is not known if the driver is aware the incident occurred.
All northbound lanes were closed from Ballarat Rd to Sunshine Ave, as well as two southbound lanes, causing peak-hour gridlock as far as the West Gate Freeway - more than 8km away.
Motorists were told to avoid the area or expect delays of more than an hour.
“It is expected there will be major traffic disruptions in the area for several hours,” police said.
All lanes have since reopened.
