The devastated loved ones of a student tragically killed on his way to school have remembered the teen as the “glue” of their family.

Thom Hosking, 15, was hit by a truck in Bendigo, 150km northwest of Melbourne in Victoria, on Friday morning and despite CPR from a passer-by could not be saved.

In a powerful tribute honouring their boy, father Andrew, mother Kim and sister Charli said the Girton Grammar student was the youngest member of their family, but important beyond his years.

“Thom’s death is a tragedy in the truest form. He was 15. A boy entering manhood with so many of life’s great moments about to open up for him,” they said in a statement.

“We are heartbroken that he will never get to realise that potential.

“Thom was the youngest in our family, but the glue of the operation.

“He was the quiet, calm and rational steady hand; he always wanted everyone to get along.”

Loved ones said Thom was a dedicated student, a keen swimmer and budding guitarist, and someone who enjoyed gaming with friends.

They also revealed he had been set to start his first part-time job on Monday.

The teen was described as “gentle, warm and loving”, a peacemaker and navigator during everyday life, on holidays and during the “trickiest moments”.

“We need his kindness, empathy and level head more than ever right now. But he is gone, and we know he’s not coming back,” his family said.

They thanked those who had reached out during this difficult time.

Girton Grammar principal Emma O’Rielly said the school community was in shock over the tragedy and counselling is being provided to students.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of High St just after 8.30am on Friday, but Thom could not be saved.

The truck driver was not injured and is assisting police with their investigation.
