Emergency services were called to an allegedly deliberately lit fire at the construction site about 1.45am.

It was extinguished by fire crews, who then saw the man in the crane.

Victoria Police negotiated with the man for several hours, eventually escorting him off the scaffolding about 8am.

He was arrested and taken to hospital.

“The 50-year-old Thomastown man (suffered) non-life-threatening injuries sustained from an unrelated incident,” Victoria Police said.

“He will be interviewed by police at a later date.”

High St was closed in both directions between Main St and Pleasant Rd for some time as a result of the police operation.
