A fruit grower has been charged after a man was found dead inside a cool room at a Victorian warehouse.

The 50-year-old was found unresponsive inside the low-oxygenated room used by fresh produce company Gvip Storage Pty Ltd in March 2023.

The discovery was made after the man’s car was spotted outside the warehouse with its engine still running.

He was declared dead at the scene.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, the cool room was being used to preserve apples.

Gvip Storage Pty Ltd has now been charged with two offences under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

“WorkSafe alleges the company failed to reduce the risk of serious injury or death by prohibiting entry to cool rooms operating with a controlled atmosphere and by having clear and prominent warning signage,” the work safety watchdog said.

The matter is listed for a filing hearing at Shepparton Magistrates Court on Friday.
