Geelong best-and-fairest winner Ray Card identified as driver in fatal car crash

It has been confirmed that Card — a best-and-fairest winner for Geelong in 1983 — was driving the vehicle on the Geelong Ring Rd at around 11.20pm AEDT on Saturday.

Card’s passenger, his 57-year-old wife, was tragically killed in the collision.

Paramedics rushed to the scene, however, Many Card was declared dead at the scene.

Card’s Ford Ranger allegedly collided with a BMW, driven by a 23-year-old Lara man.

Card, 67, was seriously injured but in a stable condition after the accident.

The driver of the BMW and his passenger, a 19-year-old Lovely Banks woman, were also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

On Tuesday, police charged Card with culpable driving causing death and dangerous driving causing death.

He is due to appear at Geelong Magistrates’ Court on November 26.

Card debuted for Geelong in 1977 and retired after 110 games at the end of 1987.

He also had other match-day roles at the club such as runner and an assistant coach for the reserves team.

He is currently the president of the Geelong Past Players and Officials Club.

Treasurer of that group Nick Walsh said they had were “shattered” when they heard about the tragedy.

“The past players and the club are deeply saddened at this news and the passing of Mandy,” Walsh said.

“We are shattered and are sending our deepest condolences to the family.”

Card’s father, George, also played for the Cats in the 1940s.
