A man has been killed and his teenage son injured after a “large tree branch” fell on their family car in Victoria’s north.

The family-of-three were trying to leave the Loop Track in Yarrawonga following a camping trip when the branch struck their car about 7.10pm on Tuesday.

“They’re a local family and they were simply trying to leave the area when a severe storm struck causing a number of branches to fall from trees and unfortunately one of those collided with the vehicle,” Wangaratta Highway Patrol Sergeant Shaun Hillier told reporters.

“I believe the other route was blocked by a tree which is why they’ve decided to go down that route and unfortunately that is when the incident has occurred.

“Freak accidents happen, and unfortunately, that’s what this is.

“It’s a tragic accident. We offer our condolences to the family and we will be supporting them in any way we can.”

The 45-year-old man, who was driving the car at the time of the incident, died at the scene.

His teenage son was taken to Wangaratta Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, where he remains. A woman was also taken to hospital for observation.

Investigations into the exact cause of the incident are ongoing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
