A tradie has been charged with the stabbing murder of a mother at her home in Melbourne’s east who died in front of her sons.

Emergency services were called to a home on Cousin Drive, Bayswater, in east Melbourne on Saturday after receiving reports at 11.15am that a woman had been stabbed.

They arrived to find 51-year-old Vicky Van Aken dead at the home.

Aken’s neighbour, Milorad Zaric, was charged with murder and appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Sunday while he was withdrawing from drugs and alcohol, the court heard.

Police alleged Zaric stormed from his Bayswater home in a fit of rage and into Aken’s house, fatally stabbing her in front of her two teenage sons.

Zaric’s 17-year-old son was also taken to hospital with cuts to his hand.

It is not clear whether he was attempting to stop his father during the attack.

Magistrate Ross Betts rejected a request to extend the time for the delivery of a brief after Victoria Police said they needed extra weeks to go through the large amounts of evidence including forensic material, CCTV and drug analysis.

Zaric is remanded in custody and will appear at a committal on February 14.

“It’s not a family violence incident,” Senior Sergeant Chris Ellway said on Saturday.

“It is a tragic set of circumstances. Another woman lost at the hands of a man is just horrible.”
