A toddler who died after being struck by an out-of-control car in Victoria has been remembered as a “bright, beautiful, and joy-filled little girl”.

Three-year-old Heidi, was walking with her mother Liesl along a footpath on President Avenue, in Ocean Grove, about 4.50pm on Friday when a car mounted the kerb and hit her.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Heidi died at the scene.

The 71-year-old female driver was arrested at the scene for questioning, but has since been released pending further inquiries.

Family friend Kristi Davidson said Heidi’s death has shaken the Ocean Grove community.

“Heidi was a bright, beautiful, joy-filled little girl who brought light and love wherever she went,” she said.

“Her absence leaves an unimaginable void in the lives of all who knew and loved her — especially her parents, Liesl and Nathan and sister, Bonnie.”

Davidson said Liesl and Nathan have felt deep gratitude for the “overwhelming love and support” they have received in the wake of the tragedy as family, friends, their church, and members of the wider community have offered prayers, meals, flowers, cards, and shared tears.

In a bid to help financially support the grieving parents during this time, Davidson has set up a GoFundMe on behalf of the family.

“This fund is being set up to help Liesl and Nathan with essential living costs — such as rent, groceries, and bills — but also with practical support like food delivery, cleaning services or anything else that helps relieve the pressure of everyday responsibilities,” she said.

“This practical support will be a blessing to them, not only so they don’t feel the need to return to work too soon, but it will allow space for them to grieve, heal, and be together.”

Victoria Police say the car was manoeuvring in the car park of the local library when the driver suddenly accelerated, launching the vehicle over a nature strip and onto the footpath.

Police are continuing to investigate exactly why the car accelerated.

Anyone who witnessed the collision or has any relevant CCTV or dashcam footage has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
