Queen Victoria Market: Man charged after fires at Melbourne’s famous food hub

A man has been charged after allegedly lighting fires and threatening a member of the public who attempted to intervene at Melbourne’s famous Queen Victoria Market.
Emergency services were called shortly after 11pm on Friday after reports of four small fires at food stalls near the Peel St end of market in Melbourne’s CBD.
Police allege the man threatened a member of the public who had attempted to intervene and put the fires out before emergency services arrived at the scene.

A 38-year-old man with no fixed address was subsequently arrested at the scene, and has since been charged with criminal damage by fire and unlawful assault.


He was remanded into custody to appear before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday.
Police said they were working with security at the market to notify stall owners of the damage.
Stall holder Sev Ali said her $20,000 juicing machine had been damaged in the blaze.
