One of Sydney’s busiest hospitals was put on high alert after a patient was allegedly assaulted with a hammer in the middle of the night.
Staff at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Camperdown declared an emergency situation after the vicious attack left a 63-year-old fighting for life.
At around 12.15am on Thursday, police allege a 46-year-old woman walked into a hospital room and launched the attack on a man who is said to be known to her.

“The assault caused serious injuries and he remains in a critical condition,” Police said in statement.
A spokesperson for Sydney LHD said: “The safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff across Sydney Local Health District are our highest priority and any form of violence in our hospitals is unacceptable.”
“We can confirm there was an incident at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital overnight where a patient was assaulted by a visitor. No other patients or staff were injured in the incident.
“This matter is now the subject of an ongoing NSW Police investigation.”
The woman was arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where she was charged with wounding a person with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
She was refused bail and will appear before Bail Division Court 6.
