Restaurant on Lygon St in Brunswick goes up in flames, diners evacuated

The tradition sees thousands of Aussie families scatter to the Bourke Street store every year.

More than a dozen diners and staff were evacuated when a restaurant went up in flames on a busy Melbourne street.

The blaze broke out at Ancient Memories Restaurant on Lygon St in Brunswick about midnight on Thursday.

There were 15 people inside when flames started billowing from the rear of the restaurant, and emergency services quickly evacuated everyone.

The fire was soon brought under control, but it took firefighters several hours to fully extinguish it.

The venue also had to be ventilated by crews as it was heavily smoke-logged with damage to a rear room and the ceiling.

While the cause of the fire is not yet clear, police have deemed it non-suspicious.
