A man has been arrested after he began smashing shop windows with a hammer at a Victorian shopping centre.

The man allegedly began smashing shop windows just before 8.40pm on Tuesday at Westfield Southland shopping centre on the Nepean Hwy in Cheltenham.

Officers rushed to the scene and arrested the man.

The 24-year-old from Clayton South is being questioned by police.

No injuries were reported.
