A woman has been left with life-threatening injuries after being hit by a ute on a busy thoroughfare during the Melbourne peak hour on Monday morning.

Roads were cordoned off as crash scene investigators looked into the major incident which occurred in Thornbury at around 6.20am.

Police confirmed the ute struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Normanby Avenue and High Street, with a 29-year-old Thornbury woman transported to hospital after suffering serious injuries.

The driver of the car, a 44-year-old Lara man, stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their inquiries.

Clarendon Street, Normanby Avenue and High Street have been closed with traffic diversions in place and advice for commuters to find an alternative route.
