More detail has emerged about a couple’s act that led to a damaged fire sprinkler at a Melbourne CBD train station, causing several platforms to flood.

It is believed the pair accessed a stairwell connecting the platforms at Melbourne Central Station and damaged a water pipe and sprinkler at 10.40pm last Thursday.

CCTV released by police shows the pair walking behind the stairwell and, not long after, sheepishly running away when water starts gushing onto the floor.

It was initially believed the damaged water pipe was an act of vandalism, but on Wednesday Victoria’s Transport Minister Danny Pearson revealed that was not the case.

“I’ve been advised that Metro have reviewed the CCTV footage and it would appear an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged the sprinkler,” Pearson said before being overcome by a fit of laughter.

“It was at Melbourne Central station in a stairwell late at night and police are investigating.

“There was extensive flooding.”

Both Melbourne Central and Flagstaff Railway stations had to be evacuated due to the flooding.

The massive flow-on caused “significant” delays to the city’s underground rail network, police said.

Among those impacted were throngs of Olivia Rodrigo fans trying to get home after her second Melbourne concert at Rod Laver Arena.

Police have released CCTV of the two suspected offenders in the hope someone recognises them.

Anyone with any information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
