“Members of the public stopped to assist the woman, including a man in a grey Mazda,” police alleged.

“When he got out of the vehicle, the woman got in and drove off.

“The man was not physically injured and reported the theft to police.”

The woman crashed into bollards outside a fire station on Maroondah Hwy a short time later.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said the man seen chasing her was believed to be known to her.

“Anyone who witnessed the incident, has footage or information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers,” police said.
