A man has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run in Perth’s southeast that left a pedestrian fighting for life in hospital.

Police say a 68-year-old man was behind the wheel of a Mazda CX-3 that struck a man walking on Albany Hwy near a 7-Eleven service station in Maddington about 7.30pm on Monday.

The driver stopped his vehicle and walked over to where the victim, 38, was lying before returning to his car and driving away without calling for help, it is alleged.

The pedestrian was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a serious condition.

Police made multiple public appeals for help to track down the driver before Major Crash officers arrested a man at his Kenwick home on Thursday.

He has been charged with failing to report an incident occasioning death or grievous bodily harm, and failing to stop and ensure assistance has been received.

The accused will appear in Armadale Magistrates Court on August 7.
