A man is fighting for life after he was mowed down by his own vehicle while it was being stolen.

The incident happened at a petrol station on the Great Northern Hwy in Halls Creek, in the east Kimberley region of WA, about 10.45am on Saturday.

A 76-year-old man had parked his Isuzu D-Max ute towing a white caravan at the service station.

Police say he was inspecting the van when someone jumped into the ute and drove off, hitting the man in the process.

The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to the Royal Darwin Hospital.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any relevant CCTV/dashcam footage has been urged to come forward.
