New appeal as police investigate death of rugby player Joseph Simpkins on Tonkin Hwy in Perth
Police are yet to determine what triggered an early morning crash that claimed the life of popular WA rugby figure Joseph Simpkins.
Simpkins, 28, was driving a Honda that crashed into a roadside barrier on Tonkin Hwy in Redcliffe, in Perth’s east.
It happened near Perth Airport sometime between 1.30am and 1.45am on Sunday, August 11, as Simpkins headed north.

“For reasons yet to be determined, the Honda crashed and the 28-year-old male driver died at the scene,” police said.
Simpkins was a popular rugby player and coach and his death was felt widely.
Tributes were held during fixtures last weekend, including mixed juniors and seniors donning the number 10 jersey in a nod to Simpkins.
“Always around The Bull Pen with a smile, his kindness, infectious laugh and amazing gift for bringing people together for a good old yarn will be sorely missed,” the Kalamunda Districts Rugby Union Club said in a tribute on Facebook.
“He was the loyalest of loyal friends and was loved and respected in the (Kalamunda) and wider rugby community. His loss leaves the biggest hole in the hearts of many.”
