Pamila-Raye Jetta appears in court after allegedly attacking toddler at Perth shopping centre

Pamila-Raye Jetta had to undergo a mental health assessment as she faced court accused of assaulting a toddler in a random attack.

A child struck during an alleged assault at a shopping centre in Perth is recovering well, her mother says.

The two-year-old was allegedly hit in the face by a stranger while being held in her mother’s arms at Park Centre in East Victoria Park on Tuesday.

The incident stunned the city and triggered an extensive police search for 21-year-old Pamila-Raye Jetta.

Jetta was arrested in Mirrabooka on Wednesday morning and charged with one count of aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm.

Two days after the alleged attack, the girl’s mother posted online saying: “my little one is a real champ”.

“She only has some minor swelling around the eye and cheek area,” she said.

“She knows that something that shouldn’t happen to her has (allegedly) happened but is otherwise okay for now.

“Just extra cuddles every night.”

Jetta faced court on Thursday wearing a blue forensic jumpsuit.

Her brief appearance was delayed by several hours so her mental health could be assessed but in the end, no hospital order was made. She gave the magistrate a thumbs up when asked if her name was correct.

Jetta did not apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until next week.
