Three other occupants of the ute were taken to Royal Perth Hospital with serious and critical injuries.

As of Monday night, a 22-year-old man remained in a critical condition while two other male passengers, aged 22 and 43, are stable.

7NEWS understands the family had been returning to Geraldton after attending a funeral in Meekatharra.

Mount Magnet Shire President Jim McGorman said the incident was “tragic” and “to lose three people is just incomprehensible”.

“They went to school here - my wife taught two of the girls involved in the incident, so it is quite close to a lot of us,” he told 7NEWS.

On Sunday, WA Premier Roger Cook said that “because of where that situation is, the first responders were largely volunteers”.

“So, our hearts go out to the families of the victims and the first responders; we thank them for their incredible work.

“It must have been a harrowing scene, and we wish everyone who is touched by this incident all the best.”

The incident brings the state’s road death toll to 114 - the highest in more than a decade for this time of year.
