Thousands of frustrated Westpac customers were left unable to access their funds after a major outage affected the Big Four bank’s EFTPOS service on Wednesday.

In a statement on social media, the bank confirmed the problem.

“We’re aware that some customers are experiencing intermittent issues accessing banking services. Our teams are working to fix the issue. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and will continue to share updates here.”

Thousands of people registered the outage with Down Detector.

One customer took to X, asking Westpac for answers.

“@westpac getting issuer down on EFTPOS machine. Is there an outage? they asked.

Another customer said they, too, were experiencing problems.

“Same here in SA, all BankSA (Westpac) cards declining, cannot access online banking.”

Late Wednesday, Westpac said retail and mobile banking services had been restored, and EFTPOS payments were working as usual.

“We’re working to resolve any remaining issues affecting our business clients and apologise for the inconvenience,” a spokesperson said.
