Australian supermarket shoppers often lament the breakability of the 25c paper bags sold at the checkouts.

But now Woolworths has admitted an actual fault with the handles of bags sold in NSW, Victoria and Queensland stores.

It occurred because of a “small change in the manufacturing process,” Woolworths told 7NEWS.com.au on Friday.

The manufacturing issue “has already been resolved” but affected paper bags may still be available in east coast stores.

“New batches of paper bags will arrive in stores over the coming weeks,” the supermarket said.

Woolworths previously told 7NEWS.com.au its paper bags are tested to hold 6kg of shopping.

Shoppers are entitled to a refund or replacement of any impacted bags — a solution required for any product which does meet fair standards, according to Australian Consumer Law.

“If a customer experiences an issue with their bag, we encourage them to speak with our store team members or reach out to our customer service online assistance,” Woolworths said.

The paper bags are not the only sustainable option available to shoppers. The supermarket offers a number of other reusable bags for sale.
