Prominent West Australian author Craig Silvey has faced court on charges of distributing child abuse material and communicating with paedophiles online.

The 43-year-old author fronted Fremantle Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with distribution of child exploitation material and possession of child exploitation material.

Child Exploitation Operations detectives executed a search warrant at the 43-year-old’s Fremantle home on Monday as part of an investigation into alleged distribution of child exploitation material.

Police allege Mr Silvey was actively engaging with other child exploitation offenders online when officers arrived at the property.

Mr Silvey was arrested and had his electronic devices seized for forensic examination.

Mr Silvey is best known for his young adult novels Runt, Jasper Jones and Honeybee, which are set around Perth and Western Australia.

In 2017, Jasper Jones was turned into a film adaptation starring Toni Collette.
