Legendary radio, TV broadcaster and politician Derryn Hinch has been admitted to hospital after developing infections during another major health battle.

Hinch notified his followers on Facebook that he will be taking a break from social media after a fall led to serious complications and another hospital stay.

The 81-year-old was pictured in his hospital bed, looking worse for wear, with a concerning update provided by an assistant.

“Hinch in hospital with infected legs after a fall. No post for a while (sic),” the message said.

News.com.au reports that Hinch has been treated for a facial melanoma, a blood infection, a cardiac arrhythmia and had to undergo a liver transplant in recent years.

He was recently asked by former 3AW host Neil Mitchell on the Neil Mitchell Asks Why podcast whether he would use voluntary assisted dying if faced with an incurable illness, and admitted he would.

“One of my best friends, Bob Rogers, did have his life taken by voluntary assisted dying because he had no quality of life,” he said, referencing the fellow veteran radio presenter who died at his Sydney home last year.

“He couldn’t go to the toilet by himself. He couldn’t shower. He couldn’t dress himself. And the last time I took him out to lunch I had to get on my hands and knees to lift his feet into a taxi. I thought, ‘This is not living’.”

In another recent interview Hinch shed some light on a previous fall that left him with two black eyes and needing to rely on a walker.

“That will speed me up and gives me incredible confidence,” Hinch told 10News+ in July.

“I say to anybody who has any leg problems, balance problems, get a walker. Pride comes before a fall.”

Hinch, who founded his own political party in 2016 and became a Senator, has been inundated with support on social media with over 2000 comments on his post wishing him a speedy recovery.
