Conclave led the BAFTA nominations, with 12 nods including in the film, directing, screenplay and two acting categories.
Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini were both recognised for their performances in the baroque papal election drama directed by Edward Berger.
The BAFTA voting body are clearly fans of Berger, whose previous film, All Quiet on the Western Front, was catapulted into the awards conversation in 2023 when it unexpectedly won seven gongs.

In recent years, the BAFTAs have delighted in nominating some left-field projects with its focus on homegrown talent but the 2025 shortlist is in close lock-step with other awards bodies in a season with several favourites and few clear frontrunners.
There were some notable inclusions including Marianne Jean-Baptiste in Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths. The British Jean-Baptiste has been recognised by many critics groups but were snubbed by the Golden Globes and the SAGs.
Perennial BAFTA favourite, Irish actor Saoirse Ronan was nominated for her performance as an alcoholic in The Outrun, a film that lost momentum early in the awards season.
Irish film Kneecap, the fictionalised origin story of Belfast rap group Kneecap, racked up six nominations. It is considered a strong chance for an Oscars international feature nod.
Nicole Kidman’s lauded performance in Babygirl was shut out, which, combined with her missing out on a SAG nomination, puts her on the bubble when it comes to her Oscar heat.
The lead actress category is one of the most highly contested this year without an obvious frontrunner. Demi Moore will be hoping to repeat her Golden Globes victory but Jean-Baptiste and Wicked’s Cynthia Erivo have the home-team advantage.
Daniel Craig was also blanked for his performance in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer, with The Apprentice’s Sebastian Stan and Heretic’s Hugh Grant sneaking into the lead actor category.
Denzel Washington also missed out on a nod for Gladiator II. Washington, a two-time Oscar winner, has never before been nominated for a BAFTA.
Australian nominees include Guy Pearce for his supporting performance in The Brutalist, and Greig Fraser for his cinematography on Dune: Part Two.
The BAFTAs ceremony is scheduled for February 16 with David Tennant slated to host.
