Scary Movie 6 trailer drops as Anna Faris, Regina Hall and Wayans brothers reunite

Just like a knife-wielding maniac, a horror franchise can never die. Not even the spoof ones. Scary Movie is returning for a sixth adventure.

Fun fact: Did you know the original name for Scream was Scary Movie?

The title was changed towards the end of production to Scream, and then Dimension Films, Scream’s production company, used Scary Movie when it launched the now infamous spoof series in 2000.

It was fitting, considering Scary Movie only existed because of the slasher resurgence that kicked off thanks to the cultural phenomenon of Scream.

And just like Scream, you can never keep a horror franchise down. Even if you follow the rules of the brain, eyes and throat, the knife-wielding maniac will always return, whether it’s Jason, Michael Myers or Ghostface.

Scary Movie 6, which is also just called Scary Movie (much like how Scream 5 was also just called Scream), is due for release on June 11, and the first trailer has just dropped, reminding us all of how many new horror tropes and characters have entered the lexicon since its last adventure in 2013.

Overlaid with Eminem’s 2002 hit Without Me, there’s obviously more Scream, with the promise of Ghostface (in a Megan disguise) stalking his prey on the subway, just like in the sixth Scream outing, as well as nods to Smile, Heart Eyes, Wednesday, Sinners, Get Out, Longlegs, The Substance and Terrifier.

There’s a throng of people running with their arms outstretched, a la the kids in Weapons, and a character fighting while wielding giant dildos, just like in Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Many of the OGs are returning, even though some have much more “respectable” careers than when they first played those roles a quarter of a century ago. Regina Hall doesn’t need to do Scary Movie, but it’s clearly a hell of a lot of fun.

Anna Faris, the final girl from the first Scary Movie and was in three more but sat out Scary Movie 5, is also back.

Joining them are the Wayan brothers brains-trust including Marlon and Shawn on screen, while Keenen Ivory and Craig are also screenwriters and producers. The Wayans haven’t been involved since Scary Movie 2, so this is a proper reunion.

Other returnees include John Abrahams, Lochlyn Munro, Dave Sheridan and Cheri Oteri, who were in the first film; Chris Elliott, who had been in Scary Movie 2, and Anthony Anderson, who was in movies three and four.

The Scary Movie folks have reasons to be optimistic because Scream 7 just had a whopper of an opening weekend. The Neve Campbell-led movie had a franchise-best result with $US97 million at the global box office.

Scream 7 leaned heavily into nostalgia by placing its OG final girl, Sidney Prescott, at the centre of a story littered with callbacks, while Williamson returned to just write but direct for the first time.

That lays half the groundwork for Scary Movie who will be going after a lot of those same audiences who want to tap into the warm-and-fuzzies of their youth.
