Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer is giving a lot away
Tom Holland and Zendaya are back for another Spider-Man movie, and they’ve brought along some familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

It’s no longer enough to just launch the trailer for a new movie by releasing it on YouTube. You have to make it an event.
By the time the first Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer arrived, it had already been seeded across the internet, but in two-second-long microclips posted by select superfans chosen for the honour.
Those mini teases got the diehards worked up, so that by the time everyone else had noticed with the drop of the full two and a half minutes, the online chatter was already rolling.

It was a lot for the trailer, not even the movie, but it worked. In the 24 hours since its release, it’s been viewed 14 million times on just Spider-Man’s official YouTube account.
It’s been four years since Spider-Man: No Way Home was released at the end of 2021, still one of the biggest box offices since Covid shutdowns upended the cinema business. The Holland-led film earnt $US1.9 billion.
At the end of that film, Peter Parker sacrificed his relationships with his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) and girlfriend MJ (Zendaya) to save the multiverse from collapsing. He chose that everyone should forget Peter Parker’s existence.
Now, he’s the anonymous Spider-Man, and he watches from afar as MJ and Ned live their lives, at one point, attending a party they throw as their (friendly) neighbour.
Peter says in voiceover, “Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the right thing, even if it breaks Peter Parker’s heart”.
In a packed trailer, we glimpse the villain Scorpion (Michael Mando), who Peter first met in the 2017 movie Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as two familiar faces in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but new to the Spider-Man films – Frank Castle/The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and Bruce Banner/Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).
Peter goes to Banner because he seems to be having issues with his powers, and the official logline for the film described it “as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence”. Ominous.

Frank and Peter seemingly have an antagonistic relationship, but given that they’re both on the side of good, you would expect them to eventually team up. It’s rumoured that Frank will be working with an as-yet-unrevealed character played by Sadie Sink, who was not explicitly seen in the trailer (online speculation argued that Sink’s back and/or her hands is visible).
Peter is also seen fighting a throng of red-decked ninjas which are very likely to be The Hand, a nefarious organisation in the Marvel comic books who, on screen, were part of the Netflix/Marvel streaming universe, from which Daredevil and Frank Castle also hail.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the first Holland film not directed by Jon Watts, who has stepped away from the franchise. Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed Marvel projects Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Wonder Man, took over behind the camera.
The screenplay comes from Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who also scribed the Watts Spider-Man trilogy.
It also stars Tramell Tillman, Liza Colon-Zayas, Keith David and Marvin Jones III. Zabryna Guevara reprises her role of politician Sheila Rivera from Daredevil: Born Again, and Charlie Cox is rumoured to be returning as well.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released on July 30
