Wicked lead the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, including a surprise nod for Jonathan Bailey along with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.

The blockbuster musical also picked up nominations in the ensemble and stunt ensemble categories.

It puts Wicked in a strong position ahead of Oscars nominations, the ballot for which opens this week.

The Screen Actors Guild is the actors and performers’ union and actors are the largest branch of voters in the Oscars’ invite-only membership. The SAGs are considered a reliable guide of how the Oscars might go.

Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown (Australian release date January 23) picked up four nominations while Anora (in cinemas now) and Emilia Perez (release date January 16), both of which did well at the Golden Globes earlier this week, racked up three mentions.

There were some big omissions from the list, including Australians Nicole Kidman and Guy Pearce who were both considered strong contenders for their performances in Babygirl (release date January 30) and The Brutalist (release date January 23), respectively.

Kidman was yesterday named best actress by the National Board of Review so she is still very much in the Oscars conversation but the lack of a SAGs nomination will be a dent to her awards campaign.

Cate Blanchett was nominated for her role in streaming miniseries Disclaimer but Naomi Watts missed out.

The SAGs voters also left out British actor Marianne Jean-Baptiste who has been earning raves for her work in Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths (release date March 6), Angelina Jolie who is on the awards circuit for her performance as opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s Maria (release date January 30), and Denzel Washington for Gladiator II.

Demi Moore’s momentum continues apace, picking up a nomination for The Substance after her Globes victory.

There was also a lot of love for The Last Showgirl (release date February 20) which picked up two nominations for Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis. Anderson was also nominated for a Globe and has an appealing comeback narrative.

On the TV side, Shogun, Baby Reindeer, Hacks, The Bear and Nobody Wants This had multiple nominations, including for SAGs Awards presenter Kristen Bell.

The SAGs nominations were changed to an online announcement via press release and its website after the in-person event was cancelled due to the Los Angeles wildfires.

The ceremony will be broadcast live on Netflix on February 23.
