What’s better than a bunch of “Timothee Chalamets”? One Timothee Chalamet. The real deal.

The star of Little Woman and Call Me By Your Name surprised screaming fans when he crashed a lookalike contest in New York.

Hundreds of people flocked to New York City’s Washington Square Park in the Greenwich Village neighbourhood and caused enough chaos that police had to move the crowd on.

The contest had been organised by a YouTube personality named Anthony Po with the winner promised a paltry prize of $US50.

It wasn’t enough to just bear a resemblance to the young actor who has also appeared in Bones and All, The King and Lady Bird, they were asked to answer questions “in character” about girlfriend Kylie Jenner and proficiency in French (Chalamet is a dual American and French citizen).

Some came dressed as his characters from Wonka and the Dune movies.

As the lookalikes were posing, the actual Chalamet snuck in through the crowd between two of them and posed for photos. Media outlets reported the appearance of the actor sparked frenzied shrieks throughout the park.

Before Chalamet surprised his groupies when the contest first started, police reportedly led away one of the lookalikes in handcuffs, although the reason is unknown.

Eventually, a contestant dressed as Wonka won the $50, who, according to Vulture, said he’d spend the money on lollies.

Chalamet started his career as a teen actor in TV shows including Homeland and Royal Pains before moving onto the big screen with roles in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and Jason Reitman’s Men, Women and Children.

His breakout performance was in Luca Guadagnino’s LGBTQI romance Call Me By Your Name in 2017, for which he was nominated for an Oscar.

His stock only went up after that: working with Greta Gerwig in Lady Bird and Little Women, then with Wes Anderson for The French Dispatch and with Denis Villeneuve in two Dune adaptations.

He has starred in the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, to be released in Australia in January, in which he plays a young Dylan as he starts to gain traction as a folk singer in Greenwich Village.

Chalamet is currently filming Marty Supreme in New York City, where he was born and still lives. The Josh Safdie-directed movie was inspired by the story of table tennis player Marty Reisman and also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Tyler, the Creator, Odessa A’zion and Fran Drescher.
