The multi-award winning actor made her acting debut in 1952 and worked for six decades over a wide-range of films, shows, and plays.
The English actor was born on December 28, 1934 in Oxford and began acting at the City’s Playhouse theatre as a teenager.
She shot into international fame in 1969 when she played teacher Jean Brodie in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, which won her an Oscar for best actress.

However, it was her role as Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter series, which made her famous among younger audiences.

Other critically acclaimed roles included Lady Bracknell in Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest on the West End stage, a 92-year-old bitterly fighting senility in Edward Albee’s play Three Tall Women and her part in 2001 black comedy movie Gosford Park.
Smith was also known for playing the countess of Grantham on the huge TV hit Downton Abbey and the two subsequent movies.
In 1990 Smith was knighted by Queen Elizabeth and became a Dame.
