Actress Kristen Stewart has revealed she still thinks about the late princess years after she portrayed her in the 2021 movie, Spencer.

In a recent interview with The Telegraph in London, Stewart said she felt “haunted” by Diana, who died at 36 following a car accident in Paris in 1997.

“I still am,” she said. “I can’t drive round this city, and Paris for that matter, without thinking about her. All the love that poured out of this woman… I can cry about her at any moment.”

The actress played the late princess in the 2021 movie, Spencer, directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Stephen Knight.

The historical drama follows Princess Diana on the brink of collapse during a 1991 Christmas at Sandringham.

Stewart said that while there were physically some “massive distinctions” between her and Diana, there was some “overlap” in terms of their experiences.

“I told Pablo he was insane and he should probably hire someone else, but he refused to accept that,” she says.

“There were some massive distinctions between her and me. It was the statuesque thing. It was the eye colour – I have green eyes; she has very famously blue eyes that match her ring. So I was like, ‘Should we make the engagement ring green, then?’”

Stewart said Larraín told her: “You really must detach from those things – this is about spirit.”

According to Stewart, there was something about her “energy” that Larraín wanted for the role.

Stewart said she shared similar experiences with Diana, particularly with media attention.

“She was plucked, plucked to death [by paparazzi].”

“And her rebellious qualities felt so desperate, and so young and so vulnerable,” she said, adding that “it does kind of soul suck.”

Stewart reflected on how the role took a toll on her emotionally: “I did feel a bit like a shell, and I think she did too. That was the point.”

The Twilight actress was praised for her performance in Spencer, and was nominated for best actress at the 2022 Academy Awards but the gold statue went to Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye.
