Recap The Nightly’s live coverage of the Met Gala
For the first time in more than two decades, the Met Gala has cast a spotlight on menswear with its 2025 theme, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which was also a celebration of black style, and the connection between fashion and power for a marginalised community.
The event’s co-chairs this year were Colman Domingo, Pharrell Williams, Lewis Hamilton and A$AP Rocky, all sartorially minded black men. The guest list also included a far higher proportion of Black artists than in previous years.

Celebrities were briefed that their ensembles should channel “tailored for you” and draw on the Met’s costume exhibit, inspired by Monica L Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of the Black Diasporic Identity.
Williams, who is also the men’s creative director at Louis Vuitton, said: “I see dandyism as a set of rules and standards that reflect a certain sophistication and well-travelled taste. For black people to hit that mark or exceed it, and be consistent with it, is a matter of pride.”
Wintour added of the theme, “I’ve been very, very inspired by seeing how much it means to the black community. It’s full of creativity, it’s putting a spotlight on amazing black talent. I think it’s about self-respect, joy, confidence and liberation.
“At this moment, in our political history, it’s incredibly important to stand next to the black community.”
