Notorious cult leader Charles Manson appears to have admitted to additional killings in newly released audio recorded while he was in jail.

In 1969, Manson and his band of followers, known as the Manson Family, killed at least nine people in the hopes of starting a race war.

In 1971, Manson was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder for the deaths of seven people, including the film actress Sharon Tate.

He died in prison in 2017, age 83.

Now new audio has emerged, recorded while he was in jail, where Manson appears to confess to previously unknown killings.

“See, there’s a whole part of my life that nobody knows about,” Manson is heard saying in one of the tapes, which feature in Peacock’s new documentary series Making Manson.

“I lived in Mexico for a while. I went to Acapulco, stole some cars. I just got involved in stuff over my head, man. Got involved in a couple of killings. I left my .357 Magnum in Mexico City, and I left some dead people on the beach.”

The documentary, released on November 19, is set to recount the “early crimes that led to the murder spree in the summer of ‘69”, Peacock teases.

The Manson Family killed at least nine people in August 1969 in what has become known as the Tate-LaBianca murders.

On the night of August 9, Manson family members broke into the home of actress Sharon Tate and her husband, filmmaker Roman Polanski and killed five people, including Tate, inside.

Tate was eight-and-a-half-months pregnant and was stabbed to death by Manson Family member Susan Atkins who used the actress’ blood to scrawl the word “PIG” on the home’s front door — Manson had reportedly told his followers to “leave a sign — something something witchy” at the scene.

The next evening, wealthy couple Leno and Rosemary LaBianca were also stabbed to death by the cult members in their Los Angeles home.

Although Manson did not kill the victims — although he reportedly drove his members to the LaBiancas’ house and was there when the couple were woken and tied up — he was convicted of murder for directing his followers to commit the killings.

In a separate incident more than two weeks later, Hollywood stuntman Donald Shea was killed by Manson Family members at the instruction of their leader.

Manson was also found guilty of killing musician and former acquaintance of Manson Family members Gary Hinman in July 1969.

As well as unearthing new audio of Manson recorded while he was in prison, the Peacock documentary features interviews with Manson Family associates — Gregg Jakobson and Dianne ‘Snake’ Lake — as well as Manson’s former cellmate Phil Kaufman, a producer at Universal Studios in Hollywood.

In the teaser, Mr Kaufman described Manson as being “very good at being evil and not showing it”.

“Anything that detracted from his game plan at that time, he would squash it, but he did it with velvet gloves.”
