Billi: I am so curious about what we’re talking about today, especially when I look down at your feet.

Lyndsey: I have two different socks. I’ve got a skirt on. Do you like my crew socks, Bil?

Billi: This does not happen by accident. Lyndsey is trying to tell us something here.

Lyndsey: I’m going to enlighten her because she hasn’t heard about this sock craze, which I don’t understand how you have not. We need to drink some wine first to understand your lack of knowledge.

Billi: I have no idea what you’re talking about with these socks. Let’s drink and you tell me — what is this fashion choice?

Lyndsey: Have you not heard how the Millennials are wearing their socks?

Billi: No. And how old are people… Are we Millennials? What am I?

Lyndsey: Dude, I’m a Gen X.

Billi: I think I might be a Millennial.

Lyndsey: You are.

Billi: So my people are wearing these weird socks.

Lyndsey: They’re not weird. So the craze is to wear your crew socks, like up. You pull your socks up. Back in the day, this would be mortifying, right?

Billi: And where are they wearing…? With shorts?

Lyndsey: Everywhere. Right now you can wear your crews with dresses, with all kinds of different outfits, your workout gear… it’s cool to wear your socks over your leggings.

Billi: What are crew socks? I don’t understand what crew socks are.

Lyndsey: Well, there’s short crew socks and there are tall crew ones. Cause remember the crazy about the ankle socks?

Billi: No, I don’t. What is it? I’m sorry, I’ve never been a part of any kind of sock craze. What are we talking about? Why are we obsessed with socks?

Lyndsey: Okay. I shouldn’t say the ankle sock craze. But remember, if you were to work out and you had your sneakers on, or you would always wear ankle socks.

Billi: That’s true. And there was also a point there where you also had to wear socks that you can’t see. Cause socks, apparently, were a little bit unpopular there for a second.

Lyndsey: You’re catching on. Okay. So the sock craze right now, and apparently the millennials brought it in, is to show your socks. And Mamamia actually did this thing where they walked around their office and they asked each person like what type of sock are you wearing and what generation are you?

But are we cool enough?

Lyndsey: The funny thing is, and this actually happened to me because I went out for dinner not long ago, there was a group of seven of us and I had my cool Adidas Sambas on, the little cute sneakers.

Billi: So cool.

Lyndsey: So cool. With black crews. And I had a long denim skirt.

Billi: That’s what you wore out? With your crew socks up?

Lyndsey: Yes.

Billi: Are we really that cool? Is that really happening?

Lyndsey: I think I’m cool enough to pull it off. I think I’m quite into fashion. I don’t think I’m fashionable, but like, you know me.

Billi: I do. And I feel when you wear something, it’s like — this is what I’m wearing. What of it? You wear it with such confidence that like, I can’t even deny you the fact that you’re wearing crew socks with a denim skirt with your sneakers.

Lyndsey: Absolutely. And I frickin’ rocked it.

Billi: I believe you.

Lyndsey: Until my one friend says to me, ‘cause obviously I’m not a millennial, she’s like, oh my god, Lyndsey, what are you doing? Are you trying to be like the young people? You can’t be wearing those socks. Cause she knew, she knew the sock craze.

Billi: But you could almost pass as a millennial, honestly, you look so good.

Lyndsey: And I said, bi**h please. I am young enough. I am going to wear these socks because I actually quite like the look of them.

Billi: You are adorable.

Lyndsey: I’m going to ride the wave until it’s uncool next year and then we’ll be all mortified and we’ll be wearing our ankle socks again.

Billi: Okay, look, I can’t say that I would be comfortable wearing my socks with a denim skirt. If I were to wear a denim skirt, I would 100 per cent wear ankle socks with sneakers. And I know that might make me a little bit old school, but so be it. That’s fine. The other thing is I don’t like these short socks.

These kind of socks where they just go over the ankle. I bought a bunch of them because maybe I want to be cool too. But they annoy me so much because I feel like this part of me (the shin) now is so cold.

Anyway, when I was running, I would put on my leggings, but then I would put my socks over the top.

Lyndsey: That’s cool!

Billi: And I was thinking to myself, I don’t care if I look lame. I don’t care if I look stupid because I’m cold. I needed to have my ankles covered because I was wearing ankle socks, but that little space between my leggings and my sock was just driving me insane because it was freezing.

Lyndsey: People would have only judged going, she must be a cool millennial because look at her socks. And then I put mine over my Pilates leggings trying to fool everyone going, she must be a millennial because look at her funny socks.

Have we revolutionised your world?

Listen, fashion is ever evolving and trends come and go. The moral of today’s story is to wear what you feel comfortable in and what appeals to you, even if that means wearing your long socks with your denim skirt for the world to judge.. ahem, see. It’s all in the eye of the beholder, right?
