Anthony Albanese set to leave Kirribilli House
The Prime Minister is due to leave Kirribilli House in a few minutes. He will travel to Labor HQ to speak to party faithful on a good night for the Government.
Murray Watt: Liberal party will need to front up
Talking on the Sky News election panel, Murray Watt said Liberal leaders will need to front up to election failure.
“I think that’s a real question for the Liberal party if they can’t get their leading lights to do interviews on a night like this,” he said.
“If this turns out to be as bad a result for the liberal party as it looks, it’s the responsibility of leaders to front up and take responsibility and explain themselves.”
Hanson says voters ‘not happy’ with Dutton
Pauline Hanson, leader of One Nation, said people are not happy with the Liberal’s performance.
“What I’ve heard from a lot people on ground is their not happy with Peter Dutton and his performance,” she said.
Ms Hanson added people don’t think he has shown the right leadership qualities.
“We’ve got a lot of coalition voters coming to One Nation,” she told Sky News.
“It’s basically a protest vote against the major parties.”
Peter Dutton loses seat: 7NEWS
7NEWS has just called the seat of Dickson, with Peter Dutton losing his own seat at the election.
Labor’s Ali France has been elected in her third bid for Parliament.
Jason Clare says its been a bitter battle for Blaxland
Jason Clare, Minister for Education of Australia, said he has had a real battle for the seat of Blaxland.
“We had a real battle on our hands today, this is the biggest and hardest fight I’ve had for this seat,” he said.
“So fingers crossed it all turns out okay.”
He said the cost of living had been a primary concern for voters in his electorate.
Kate Chaney arrives at count party
Teal independent Kate Chaney has arrived at what she hopes will be her victory party as she waits to find out if she has retained the key WA seat of Curtin against Liberal Party challenger Tom White.
Ms Chaney, who went into the election with a 1.3 per cent margin, arrived at the University of Western Australian Tavern to a rockstar reception from her closest supporters - and a sizeable media pack.
Whether voters have been as enthusiastic as the crowd gathered at UWA remains to be seen after an election campaign that has seen cost-of-living increasingly dominating the political conversation – even in the wealthy western suburbs seat of Curtin.
Ms Chaney told the crowd she thought the result would be “really close” but that she was feeling “optimistic”.
Speaking soon after the election was called for Labor, Ms Chaney said she was happy to work with either side of politics but that, if the Liberal Party lost the night, she hoped they would realise they had moved “too far to the right”.
Ms Chaney won the seat from the Liberal Party in 2022 as part of the so-called “teal wave”, campaigning successful on a vow to prioritise action on climate change.
The mood at Ms Chaney’s count party, where guests could use headphones to listen to ABC election updates, was upbeat.
Northern Territory bucks national trend
On a bleak night for the Liberals, there us a shift towards the Country Liberals in the Northern Territory.
After electing a CLP Government last year, the Coalition’s Lisa Bayliss is leading Labor MP Luke Gosling by a narrow margin after a 9 per cent swing towards the Liberals in Solomon.
In the Territory’s other seat of Lingiari however, Labor’s Marion Scrymgour is in the lead.
South Australia swings towards Labor
Labor looks set to win another seat, this time in South Australia with Liberal MP James Stevens losing to Claire Clutterham in Sturt.
Former Liberal MP Nicolle Flint has also failed in her bid to re-enter Parliament, with Labor’s Louise Miller-Frost earning a 11 per cent swing to her.
Labor picks up three seats from Liberals
Labor has won three seats so far tonight from the Liberals, with two in Tasmania - Bass and Braddon falling to the Government, including Senator Anne Urquhart, who has moved to the lower house.
As part of a growing trend towards Labor in Queensland, the Government has also won the seat of Bonner from the LNP’s Ross Vasta.
Anthony Albanese wins second term as Prime Minister
7NEWS has called the election for Anthony Albanese, with no chance of Peter Dutton becoming Prime Minister.
What is unknown is the scale of his victory and whether he has won a majority for his second term, but the trend is in Labor’s favour.
Such a result would make Mr Albanese the first Prime Minister since John Howard in 2004 to be returned for a second term.
