Final poll shows Labor on track for Federal election win
Senior Coalition figures under pressure
Shadow foreign affairs minister David Coleman is struggling Banks, where he has been hit by a 7 per cent swing to Labor, with candidate Zhi Soon narrowly ahead.
In Deakin, in Victoria, shadow housing minister Michael Sukkar has fallen being Labor’s Matt Gregg.
But what is emerging as a major story is the collapse in support for Peter Dutton in his own seat of Dickson, now trailing Labor’s Ali France by more than 100 votes with more than a fifth of all votes counted.
Guests slow to filter in at Dutton HQ
Liberal party faithful have been slow to filter into Peter Dutton’s election night headquarters at Brisbane’s W Hotel this evening.
As results start to filter in after polls closed, there are early swings against Coalition-held seats including his electorate of Dickson.
Media at the Brisbane venue to cover his election night outnumber the guests who have arrived to support Mr Dutton.
No path to Government for the Coalition: 7NEWS
7NEWS’ Hugh Whitfield has said there is no clear path to Government for the Coalition.
We believe there is no path to victory for the Coalition at all tonight. It will either be a minority or majority Labor Government, with Anthony Albanese returned as Prime Minister.
We’ve had our first seat flip from the Liberal Party to the Labor Party. The seat of Bass in Tasmania is the first time tonight that we are seeing Labor gain ground.
Polls close in WA
It’s 6pm in the west, which means polls are officially closed across all Australia.
Labor is looking strong across the country and we now await the count in key WA seats, including Bullwinkel and Curtin.
Leichhardt - Matt Smith ahead of LNP
In far north Queensland’s seat of Leichhardt, Matt Smith has recorded a 14 per cent swing to Labor to have a lead over the LNP, who currently hold the seat.
Labor wins Bass from Liberal Bridget Archer
To Tasmania, where a 12 per cent swing to Labor has elected Jess Teesdale, and ended Liberal MP Bridget Archer’s time in Parliament.
In Braddon, Labor’s Anne Urquhart has a promising lead over Liberal Mal Kingston too, in a result which would see the Government win four out of five seats in Tasmania.
Victoria holds steady, but Nationals challenge Labor MP in Bendigo
Aston, won by Labor at a mid-term by-election by the Government, has been held by Labor’s Mary Doyle.
But in Bendigo, Labor MP Lisa Chesters is facing a challenge from a strong Nationals showing, with an 8 per cent swing against her.
Peter Dutton faces challenge in his own seat
With 9 per cent counted in Peter Dutton’s own seat of Dickson, the Opposition Leader is facing a real fight to hang onto his place in Parliament.
Labor’s Ali France - on her third shot at winning the seat, is currently ahead on primary votes, with a swing towards the Government. Dutton’s primary vote has slipped by 10 per cent, before the counting of prepoll and postal votes.
Liberals under threat in blue-ribbon Bradfield, and independent challenges minister
The Liberals are trailing behind a Teal-backed independent in Bradfield, where Gisele Kapterian is attempting to hold the north-shore seat for the Coalition.
And an independent is polling strongly against Cabinet Minister Jason Clare in Blaxland.
It should be noted thesde are largely counts from voters today and not early voting from the last two weeks.
Queensland Greens fading
One of the biggest take outs from the 2022 election was the election of three Green MPs from Queensland in Brisbane, Griffith and Ryan.
In all three, with early counts underway, the Greens are trailing with the Government ahead.
