King Charles and Queen Camilla met with Donald Trump and Melania Trump for afternoon tea at the White House in Washington DC, with heightened security in place following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, marking the start of their US state visit tied to America’s 250th independence celebrations.

Full security overhaul underway after DC shooting
Kash Patel says security at high-profile US events will be overhauled following the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with a full review now underway.
“The security posture, I imagine, is going to be completely different,” he said, as authorities continue to assess how the suspect was able to get so close to the venue.
Mr Patel said investigators have been working around the clock, conducting extensive interviews with people connected to the alleged gunman Cole Allen and analysing his online activity.
“What we are going to do is continue to look at the interviews that we’ve conducted, the dozens and dozens of interviews we conducted over the weekend and put that in one place to show you what he did, how he got there, when he got there, when he arrived, how he got down to the area in question, how he was able to get through security undetected,” he said.
Trump names new US ambassador to Australia after long vacancy
A conservative Republican from Virginia who served in Congress for five years has been nominated by President Trump as the next US ambassador to Australia, a post that’s been vacant since 2024.
David Brat, who holds a PhD in economics, has worked at Liberty University School of Business since his term in the US House of Representatives ended in 2019.
If Brat’s nomination as ambassador is approved by the Senate, he will replace Democrat Caroline Kennedy, who departed Canberra shortly after President Trump’s election win in 2024.
Trump demands Kimmel be fired after explosive rant
Donald Trump has called for Jimmy Kimmel to be fired, accusing him of crossing a line in a late-night monologue that referenced First Lady Melania Trump.
In a Truth Social post, Mr Trump described the segment as “really shocking” and criticised a parody moment involving Melania and his son Barron, quoting Kimmel’s remark: “Mrs Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
The president also drew a link between the monologue and the attempted breach at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, writing that “a day later a lunatic tried entering the ballroom… loaded up with a shotgun, handgun, and many knives”.
He said many Americans were “incensed” by what he called Kimmel’s “despicable call to violence”, adding: “Jimmy Kimmel should be immediately fired by Disney and ABC.”
Suspected gunman charged over attempted Trump assassination
A man accused of shooting a US Secret Service agent as he tried to breach security at a Washington DC dinner attended by US President Donald Trump is facing federal charges of attempting to assassinate the president, a judge says.
Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, also faces firearms charges.
Allen wore a blue prison jumpsuit at his first appearance in Washington DC federal court, two days after authorities said they foiled an attack at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, an annual black-tie gathering of journalists and politicians.
Allen has not yet responded to the allegations.
Seated at the defence table flanked by US Marshals, Allen said he would answer all questions truthfully and that he had a master’s degree in computer science.
Prosecutors are seeking Allen’s detention while the case moves forward.
First Lady slams Jimmy Kimmel after ‘hateful’ parody
US first lady Melania Trump says it is time for US broadcaster ABC to “take a stand” on Jimmy Kimmel after a monologue the late-night talk show host delivered prior to a shooting near a gathering of journalists and politicians over the weekend.
“Enough is enough. It is time for ABC to take a stand. How many times will ABC’s leadership enable Kimmel’s atrocious behaviour at the expense of our community,” she said in a post on X.
Kimmel, in a parody of the White House Correspondents Dinner that aired last week before the actual event, said: “Mrs Trump you have a glow like an expectant widow.”
“Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country,” Melania Trump said.
“His monologue about my family isn’t comedy - his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.
“People like Kimmel shouldn’t have the opportunity to enter our homes each evening to spread hate.
King Charles arrives in US as Washington reels from shooting
King Charles and Queen Camilla have arrived in the United States for a four-day trip, a tour which has taken on even greater prominence after the White House Correspondents’ dinner shooting and amid acrimony between the close allies.
The state visit, by far the most high-profile and consequential of King Charles’ reign, marks the 250th anniversary of the US declaration of independence from British rule, and is the first to the country by a United Kingdom monarch for two decades.
King Charles and Queen Camilla touched down at Joint Base Andrews about 2.30pm ET and will head to the White House for a private meeting with self-proclaimed royal fan President Donald Trump.
The King and Queen disembarked from their plane together and were greeted at the foot of the aircraft by US chief of protocol Monica Crowley and the UK ambassador to the US, Christian Turner.
