AFL Trades 2024: Report card from day one of the AFL trade period
The West Australian gives a grade to every trade and free agency move on day one, including West Coast premiership forward Jack Darling’s move to North Melbourne. Recap all the action from day one in our live blog below.
WE HAVE A TRADE
Alex Neale-Bullen is officially a Crow. This was expected to be one of the first deals done and so it is. The Demon will join Adelaide for pick 28.
Neale-Bullen had wanted to head home to SA for family reasons and seems an amicable parting of ways for all parties.
He joins free agent Isaac Cumming (GWS) while James Peatling is also set to land at the Crows from the Giants.
WA talent up for grabs
Top WA prospect Bo Allan has firmed as a top-10 selection in November’s AFL draft after he showcased his incredible athleticism at this year’s national combine.
The Peel Thunder product was top 10 in the running vertical jump, standing vertical jump and the agility test to finish the three-day combine as the most well-rounded athlete.
Way to go....
Fremantle list boss David Walls spoke to The West Australian in a wide-ranging interview about the trade period.
Here were some of the topics covered.
- Will Brodie set to stay in purple despite not playing a game in 2024
- Dockers won’t be overpaying despite high asking price for Shai Bolton
- Alex Pearce and Andrew Brayshaw contract updates
- Future pick trading set to unlock club’s pursuit of Chad Warner
The Dockers currently has picks 10, 11, 18, 30, 66, 86.
Huge if true
Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick is excited about where his club sits
Fremantle chief executive Simon Garlick says the club is “really well placed” this trade period with three first-round draft picks at their disposal.
Garlick said the attractive option to take those picks to a strong draft in November put them in a strong position in trade negotiations.
“We’ve got a pretty strong draft hand, that gives us quite a bit of flexibility to either enhance our list with established talent who might want to come to our footy club,” he told SEN.
“Or bring in top end talent in what is a pretty strong draft... we feel really well placed.”
Geelong water down Oliver links
Geelong list boss Andrew Mackie declared interest in Melbourne’s Clayton Oliver was “fleeting” as he put a full stop on any potential move after a week of drama.

West Coast list boss Matthew Clarke speaks
First thing is getting the Darling moved finalised before all eyes turn to Barrass.
“I think we’re in conversation now with North and I expect to get that done,” he says.
“With respect to Jack Pick 67 should get it done and we’ll move on.”
“We haven’t heard from Jack Graham yet, we hope to hear from him soon with free agency closing on Friday.
“We’ve had a few clubs talk to us about pick 3, it looks like a pretty even draft.
“Barrass is contracted for three years, we value him really highly and there will have to be a bit more movement.
“Tim [Kelly} is contracted for next year and he’s firmly in our plans.
“We’ve talked about a number of players who can help us and Dev Robertson is of the right age and profile.”

Swans working with Warner
The Sydney star is out of contract at the end of next season and both WA clubs will be pushing hard to bring him home.
“Chad’s a fantastic player and one of the best young talents in the game,” Sydney’s Chris Keane says on Trade Radio.
“We’re talking with his management as we do with all our players, it’s a pretty tight-knit group and we’ll be doing everything we can to retain him.
A long way to go for Houston
Chris Davies speaks as he has potentially the biggest deal to negotiate in this period.
“Dan Houston has not nominated a club.”
“I’m not too fussed about where he wants to go it’s more about what‘s best for Port Adelaide.
“Clubs have started to come to us but the first point is not where the endpoint lands.”
“We want a good deal, better than a fair for a player that is a two-time All-Australian.”
