Foundation club St Kilda wiped from AFL history in league’s 2025 campaign
The AFL’s 2025 season launch continues to stumble along on shaky ground with its new ‘advertisement campaign’ launched this week and failing to acknowledge a foundation club.
After the league’s disastrous soft launch to the season last week — where only two games were played in NRL territory — the AFL is now gearing up for a full round of matches which will start on Thursday night at the MCG.

The new ad celebrates the history of the game, with the catchy tag of “160 years of the good stuff”.

But not all clubs feature in the ad and St Kilda fans are particularly filthy, given they are a foundation club.
That line “160 years” seemingly represents when Melbourne (1858), Geelong (1859), and Carlton (1864) were formed.
The official start of the AFL/VFL is in 1897, and the league’s foundation clubs are widely considered to be Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy (who later merged with Brisbane), Geelong, Melbourne and South Melbourne (who later moved to Sydney).
Carlton and St Kilda are also recognised as foundation clubs as they were invited to join the newly set-up league and played in the first season in 1897 (Essendon were the official winners that year, while St Kilda were last after 14 home and away rounds).
In the AFL’s season launch advertisement, however, there’s plenty of Swans, GWS, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Richmond, Collingwood, and Adelaide ... even North Melbourne gets a decent splash ... but the Saints have been wiped from history.
Sport journalist Nick Splitter took to X (formerly Twitter) to highlight the snub.
“So, St Kilda - one of the few AFL clubs actually with 160 years of history - doesn’t make the cut for a mention in the AFL ad spruiking 160 years of history?” he fumed.
And fans shared his sentiment.
“Apparently St Kilda doesn’t exist?” one fans said.
And another: “Shocking, considering its showing 160 years of footy, and St Kilda have been there for 152 of them. Disgusting form.”
And another: “Did St Kilda dirty here. Pathetic.”
And another: “The AFL have screwed St Kilda over with the fixture for years but now they totally forget about them.”
Western Bulldogs also felt that their club had been snubbed, while Geelong didn’t get much of run either (however, a fan with a Cats scarf features, as does new recruit Bailey Smith).
