But there was a moment with coach Adam Kingsley on the sidelines midway through the final term that raised eyebrows.

With about 10 minutes remaining in the thrilling clash, Callaghan was taken off the field for his final rest.

But the youngster appeared unhappy with the decision, having words with his coach before “stalking” him on the sidelines.

“Have a look at this. Callaghan was taken off by the coach and Callaghan actually asking ‘why are you taking me off? Why are you taking me off for?’ And it’s a good question!” Channel 7 commentator Brian Taylor said.

Kane Cornes added: “You just love that, a young kid just wanting to put his stamp on the game.”

Callaghan returned to the field shortly after and played a crucial role in the winning goal.

He won a pivotal contest in the middle of the ground before getting out a handball, with the ball eventually landing in the hands of veteran Callan Ward, who delivered a pinpoint pass to Lachie Keeffe.

Keeffe then went back and kicked the goal to seal the memorable victory.

Speaking on Monday morning, Cornes went into further detail about Callaghan’s moment.

“I like the exchange between Callaghan and Kingsley on the interchange bench and I like that from a young player,” he said on SEN.

“He’s come off with about 10 minutes to go and he’s standing there going ‘what are you taking me off for?’ And he was stalking the coach, he didn’t sit down on the bench.

“And then Kingsley’s got him back on, thank goodness. But he’s arrived.”

Speaking after the match, Kingsley heaped praise on the unlikely match-winner.

“Lachie fought all day and got rewarded with a moment that he took,” Kingsley said post-match.

“It was a beautiful kick, great finish.

“It’s really important for him. He’s one of our favourites.”

It was a second win from as many games for GWS, who destroyed Collingwood in their season opener and are expected to be in flag contention this season.
