RECAP: West Coast Eagles go down to Hawthorn at Marvel Stadium
West Coast battled hard after halftime and ensured they would not be heading home with a triple-figure hiding under their belt.
However, they were well out-matched by the Hawks as the home side ran out 50-point victors.
Co-captain Oscar Allen’s move to defence failed to help the visitors get a foothold in the game, with the Hawks banging through nine first-half goals - including Allen’s opponent Mabior Chol booting two.
Recap the action as it unfolded in our blog below.
The battle!
When Allen was moved back we thought we would miss out on seeing him take on his old mate Tom Barrass who now plays for the Hawks.
But Sam Mitchell has delivered, sending Barrass to full forward to match up on Allen to start the last quarter.
I wonder who laughed the hardest at the match-up?

THREE-QUARTER TIME: Hawthorn 86, West Coast 49
The Eagles gave up a quarter win in the final seconds just after Hough missed a shot on the run.
It would have been just the third time they had achieved the feat this season, but at least the fight gives McQualter hope he is starting to find green shoots in this young side.
They are still far out-skilled but effort can make up for a lot in any pursuit.
Harley Reid had a much-improved term, so much so, the crowd have started to give him a few boos.
Hawthorn continue to look awful from set shots while Chol has been impressive, flying high for clunks and kicking goals.
Maric and Hough still lead the way for West Coast with disposals.

Harley!
A quick stint on the bench does the trick for the young gun.
The 20-year-old has struggled today and keeps giving away free kicks in frustration.
But he shows his footy nouse in the forward line to split congestion and get the ball to boot for a nice goal.
West Coast then forced a repeat ball-up in the next centre contest and won the ball at the second time of asking.
Owies delivers a nice lead for an easy chest mark and converts the set shot.
Can they win the quarter?

Breaking point
Chasing the game is taking it’s toll on the Eagles and the lapses in concentration are hurting more and more.
The Hawks slip two easy goals through in a couple of minutes while the Eagles struggle to recapture their breath.
They could have had two more.
Graham missed a pot shot at the other end but turnovers and a midfield thrashing have West Coast on the verge of another major hammering.

First strike
It’s been an ugly start to the second half but that suits the Eagles and they grab the first goal.
The ball was sent forward with chaos and Ryan was finally able to get a touch in space and made it count in full with a nice snap.
The Hawks missed a shot early and have been sloppy but the Eagles have not given up yet.
Harley Reid is trying hard but he is a step off the mark today and looks low on confidence.

Hawks sub
Scrimshaw is out of the contest with Macdonald in.
Scrimshaw was involved in a heavy knock in the first term and has not come up from the break.
Upset!
Carlton have taken down Geelong at the MCG.
The Blues completed an 18-point victory to continue their resurgence that started with a big win over the Eagles in Gather Round.
The final score was 14.10 (94) to 12.4 (76).
HALFTIME: Hawthorn 64, West Coast 29
The last 90 seconds of the half went the Eagles way but that is about the only positive.
Harley Reid grabbed four disposals in that time after having just two for the rest of the match.
West Coast don’t lead in a single category and 35 points down is sadly flattering.
Maric has had plenty of it as West Coast’s deliver but if Flynn can’t figure out a way to even the ruck the midfield don’t stand a chance.
McQualter with a lot of fires to address at the long break.

Where to start
The Eagles had just two tackles in the first half of this quarter as the Hawks piled on five majors.
Hawthorn are scoring around 75 per cent of the time they go inside 50 while the Eagles are around 40 per cent.
West Coast’s kicking is also running at a lowly 40 per cent.
The Hawks are winning centre clearances nine to two.

The roost-er!
Waterman is trying to keep his side in the game by himself!
He took a diving mark at the 55-metre mark and went back for an improbable set shot.
He snuck a few extra metres swinging out to his right before launching the ball through the goals.
