Cricket: After 18 wickets fell on the very first day of Test cricket played at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena, Australia are on top, but Bangladesh are refusing to go away.

Fresh off the most impressive win in their history, the tourists were routed for 64 in the first innings, with Mitchell Starc finishing with figures of 6-12 to be the chief destroyer for Australia.

And while Australia will take a lead of at least 101 into the second innings, the fragility in their batting line-up was exposed again, this time by Bangladesh’s left-armer Shoriful Islam.

Shanto introduces spin

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has seen enough from Hasan Mahmud and has brought his left-arm spinner Taijul Islam into the attack.

Cam Green sought some instruction from the Australian dugout over how to play the situation, but their response was unclear.

Green going through gears

Cam Green is showing some real intent this morning, slamming a short and wide Hasan Mahmud offering away to the boundary for four before playing a stunning cover drive to net the same result.

The outfield at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena is still lightning fast.

GOAT goes bang

Nathan Lyon has got away by flicking Shoriful Islam through mid-wicket for four.

Australia will be hoping the off-spinner can hang around much longer than some of his middle-order teammates.

Green going large?

Cam Green added the first single to his overnight score by tucking the ball off his hip.

But if the vision captured by Channel Seven’s cameras of him in the nets this morning is anything to go by, he may look to open the shoulders soon.

Day two begins

The players are in position at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena and we’re ready to go.

Hasan Mahmud, who went wicketless yesterday after a man-of-the-match showing in Darwin, will take up the attack for Bangladesh.

State of play

WA’s Cam Green, who is all of a sudden his side’s most in-form batter, is at the crease on 51 not out, alongside Nathan Lyon (10 not out).

The pair will need to resist Bangladesh’s left-arm seamer Shoriful Islam, who bagged six wickets before stumps was called last night.

The first day of Test cricket to be played at Mackay’s Great Barrier Reef Arena was certainly memorable, with 18 wickets falling.
