Smith sigh of relief

Steve Smith had gone seven innings without passing 31 before today, marking the toughest stretch of his superb career.

He’s had some luck at times today but has knuckled down across 121 deliveries now, anchoring Australia’s innings and fuelling confidence of a return to form.

In a bizarre quirk, Smith is averaging more than 140 at the Gabba this year - and just 15 at every other Test venue combined!

Earlier...

Australia’s top three failed to fire, with none of them able to face more than 55 deliveries.

Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney both fell to Jasprit Bumrah for 21 and 9 respectively, and Marnus Labuschagne produced another low score after nicking Nitish Kumar Reddy to slip for 12.

This partnership has built to 83 and is just what the home nation needed after falling to 3-75 in Brisbane.
