Cricket: Australia moved into a strong position after some poor Egnland bowling and worst fielding on day two but left the door open with their own brain fades on day two.

They lead by 44 runs, with Alex Carey and Michael Neser having the chance to bat England out of the match and potentially the series but England will hope they can run through the tail.

It’s the England captain once again as Neser flirts with one outside off and edges through to Smith who makes no mistake this time.

He nearly got out the previous ball on the same shot but it’s been good bowling from Stokes who’s kept it tight and settled on a line outside off.

Neser defends the rest.

AUS 6-379

Weatherald feels like he’s here to stay.

After a tough first Test, his knock of 72 has the Tasmanian feeling like he belongs.

“I took a lot of confidence out of it,” Weatherald told SEN.

“It’s one of those things, you want to belong somewhere, and playing cricket, you’re always on your toes about your performance.

“If I can just consistently rock up and do the right things ... I could be here for a while.”

England still in the hunt says Broad.

“I actually can’t think in my whole lifetime that any other Australian side wouldn’t have just buried England yesterday,” he says on Channel 7 and 7plus.

“Wouldn’t have just put the game to bed and been 3/400 and thanks for coming.

“England are still in this game somehow after a day lacking skill and they have to be better. And they will be better.”

Recap of day two

If you need a referesher on how we got here here’s a recap of day two.

Welcome

Hello and welcome to day three from the Gabba in what could be the defining day of The Ashes.

If Alex Carey and the tail can bat well the series could just about be over but if England run through the tail they’ll be right back in the hunt.

We’re just over half an hour away from the start of play.
